Thrilling head-to-head matches, numerous flips, and unexpected falls made the 10th edition of the Red Bull WakeDuel at 313 Cable Park in Lithuania one of the most spectacular in the event’s history.

After a one-year hiatus, this unique event returned to Lithuania last week. Once again, riders from all corners of the globe made their way to 313 Cable Park to train for a week at this wakeboarding hotspot and prepare for one of the most extraordinary contests in cable wakeboarding.

In addition to training, the week’s schedule included qualifiers for Lithuanian and international riders as well as a Best Air Trick Contest, before the top 32 men and top 16 women faced off in the big showdown on Saturday.

The setup was once again truly impressive. Two pools, numerous walls, rail-to-rail transfers, and countless line options ensured creative and high-risk runs—and, as always, left spectators gasping for breath in the final section, when the riders had to muster enough energy after a long run for two big airtime maneuvers (kicker-to-lander and kicker) right in front of the crowd.

What makes WakeDuel so special? From the very first round, it’s all head-to-head competition. A single mistake can mean immediate elimination, yet strategy plays a huge role. Thanks to the unique judging format—where riders must win two out of three sections—and a full week of training together, the riders knew exactly where their strengths lay and where they needed to take risks or play it safe against their respective opponents.

And that’s exactly what we saw. Exciting showdowns broke out as early as the first few rounds on Saturday. For example, up-and-coming talent Isaic Claudio edged out the stylish Red Bull veteran Massi Piffaretti with technically strong runs, before his run against the experienced Frenchman Clément Nadel ended just short of the top 8. On the other side of the bracket, several favorites—including Dom Hernler, Timo Kapl, and Cam Charraud—had to bury their hopes for the title early on—often not due to a lack of tricks, but because of small careless mistakes that are mercilessly punished in WakeDuel.

Perhaps the biggest surprise came from top favorite Gavin Stuckey, who crashed on the SpaceMob bumper during his duel against Liam Peacock, opening the door for the Brit. With plenty of momentum and technically strong runs, Peacock then knocked Pedro Caldas out of the competition and fought his way into the Super Final despite strong competition in his bracket.

The women’s competition was anything but boring, too. The two talented up-and-coming riders, Nike Hauser and Nanou Lenaers—whom many had marked as potential dark horses following their strong results at events like the Langenfeld Open—had to face favorites Rivers Hedrick and Claudia Pagnini in the very first round and were eliminated early despite a strong week of training.

The match between the two Lithuanian riders, Klaudija Tiškovaitė and Viltė Matuzevičiūtė, who faced off in the first round, really got the crowd going. This ensured that at least one local rider would make it into the top 8. Both were cheered on just as loudly by the home fans—even though their run ultimately came to an end against the experienced Sanne Meijer, with her numerous world championship titles.

At 4 p.m. on Saturday, the moment finally arrived: The Top 4 Women and Top 8 Men battled it out for the anniversary ring live on Red Bull TV for the first time. What followed were close calls, big tricks, a few unexpected mistakes, and plenty of excitement right up to the final duel.

In the women’s division, the rivalry between Claudia Pagnini and Rivers Hedrick moved to the next round. While Rivers made a few uncharacteristic mistakes, Claudia executed her runs cleanly and, in tears, secured the anniversary ring. In the battle for third place, old-school hero Sanne Meijer showed off all her experience in windy and changeable conditions, holding off young gun Campbell Scarborough.

In the men’s competition, Trent Stuckey looked set to claim the title for a long time, but Liam Peacock and Kieran Owens made it anything but easy for the multiple champion. Uncharacteristic stumbles, close calls, and intense pressure meant that even Trent had to give it his all right up until the final match.

So, once again, the favorites ended up at the top of the podium, but it was another nail-biter, and we can already look forward to the upcoming major contests where the girls and guys will face off again. The next opportunity will be at Munich Mash in late June at Munich’s Olympiapark.
